Adaptogenic oatmeal with forest fruits

In the colder autumn and winter months, it's great to start the day with a warm breakfast such as this adaptogenic oatmeal with forest fruits. It's very nutritious and light and provides you with energy for a long period of time.

I always eat raw fruit by itself, so my body can digest it properly. 
If you cook it for a while however, it changes the composition and you can more easily combine it with other food. This is also done in Ayurveda for example. Towards the end I add the forest fruits to the oatmeal and let it cook together which also makes the oatmeal extra tasty!
You can customize this dish with adaptogens according to what you need the most at that moment. 
Starting your day you might need a little extra energy or focus or maybe a dose of calmness.

Adaptogenic oatmeal with forrest fruits

Soak the oats the night before in water with a little lemon juice in it. This helps to reduce the phytic acid, a compound found in many grains, beans, nuts and seeds.
This acid binds to vitamins and minerals, which inhibits their absorption and can cause deficiencies in your body in the long term.

Cook the oatmeal the next morning with (plant-based) milk and some ground cinnamon.

Add 1/2 - 1 teaspoon of adaptogens of your choice and stir everything well.

Add the forest fruits, both fresh and frozen work fine. I used a combination of blackberries that I picked myself and froze a batch of, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and red currants.

Let everything cook on a low heat, then turn off the heat and stir in some maple syrup or honey if you like it sweet.
